CSR and CCR

Businesses want to invest into art and culture more than ever today. It is about the preservation of cultural diversity, about the development and enrichment of the cultural landscape as an essential resource of our environment. Today, companies conduct business globally and are gaining increasingly sociopolitical importance. Business reputation plays a more important role in international capital markets. Business activity that goes beyond normal corporate activity is an opportunity to distinguish itself, to demonstrate social responsibility to the community.

The term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been established to describe the social engagement of companies in Germany. Corporate Cultural Responsibility (CCR) is the necessary focus of this concept towards cultural aspects. The term was introduced by Dr. Beate Hentschel of the Siemens Arts Program and by Dr. Michael Hutter, Witten-Herdecke University. From 2002 until 2006 their institutions researched in a CCR project the reasons, purpose and use of nourishing the cultural environment through corporations. The aim was to initiate a discourse about the topic and to show possibilities of implementing Corporate Cultural Responsibility.
A direct exchange between scientists, company representatives and interested third parties takes place regularly at symposia on Corporate Cultural Responsibility, organized by the Kulturkreis Working Group for Arts Sponsorship.
