History

For over 50 years the Kulturkreis has belonged to the most significant institutions for entrepreneurial art  support in Germany. It was founded in 1951 in Cologne as the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e.V. Present were the Federal President of Germany, at the time Theodor Heuss, and numerous prominent economic and political figures. Several of the most significant German corporations had the desire to advocate an artistic and spiritual rebuilding of Germany at a time in which material rebuilding was in the foreground. They recognized the necessity to take entrepreneurial responsibility for the arts and to recover the connection to modernity which had been interrupted by National Socialism.

With the establishment of the Kulturkreis, a unique model was developed for the ongoing successful relationship between arts and the economy. As a collaborative of businesses and entrepreneurs the Kulturkreis is still influenced by its originals goals: philanthropic advocacy of contemporary art, commitment to important works of German art history, and participation in cultural political discussion.
